Students are different today because of technology. Every educator knows this, of course, but this change is about much more than agile thumbs, shriveling attention spans, and OMG'd vocabularies. According the Pew Research Center, the combination of widespread access to broadband Internet connectivity, the popularity of social networking, and the near ubiquity of mobile computing is producing a fundamentally new kind of learner, one that is self-directed, better equipped to capture information, more reliant on feedback from peers, more inclined to collaborate, and more oriented toward being their own "nodes of production." Call for Papers: "Succeeding as Women in Higher Education"

Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies, SUNY Cortland

In Fall 2009, CGIS will host a two-day conference “Succeeding as Women in Higher Education.” Regional and national experts and scholars will be invited to discuss changes in academic practices and values.

Institutional change will be addressed in this forum, looking at academia’s needs and models that are effective and could be replicated. Taking our cue from Bernice Sandler (referred to as the “Godmother of Title IX” by the New York Times) who called on institutions to take steps to dismantle the chilly gender climate, this conference will focus on talks and workshops that teach about best practices across the academy. Thus we invite female graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, administrators, and professionals. We will provide networking, mentoring, and educational opportunities at concurrent sessions, a plenary with regional college and university presidents, and a keynote address designed to investigate these questions:

1. What are the reasons that women are not in leadership positions in higher education in general?
2. What institutional practices exist to support, enhance, and cultivate gender equity in higher education?
3. What values impede or promote women in leadership positions?
4. What attributes or credentials are required for women in leadership positions?

Papers, artistic presentations, and workshops may address gender equity in some of (but not limited to) the following ways:

Ø Identifying and developing counter-values that are non-hierarchical and inclusive in decision making strategies
Ø Best practices of gender equity in successful institutions
Ø Fully examining and identifying dimensions of the “chilly climate”
Ø The effects of Women’s Centers and Women’s Studies program on the college/university/community
Ø The efficacy and purpose of Women’s Faculty Networks and/or Women’s Initiatives
Ø Supporting scholarship with more flexible schedules and other practices
Ø Professional development/mentorship program for women professors
Ø Union versus non-unionized campuses vis-à-vis family friendly policies
Ø Leadership development and succession planning for the next generation of female leaders
Ø Focusing on professional advancement through the lens of age, ability and ableism, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation
Ø Protecting academic freedom and resisting academic repression

The program committee will select the best papers for inclusion in Wagadu: A Transnational Journal of Women’s and Gender Studies (wagadu.org).

analysis and production into your curriculum by providing the theory of media literacy, hands-on practice with digital/computer technology (Mac-based), and one-on-one coaching by nationally acclaimed PLS staff. The course may be taken for 3.3

“And he simply loves learning for its own sake,” writes Dr. Joseph Fornieri (left in photo), a political science professor at RIT, of Adam Botzenhart (center), a 2004 Newark Valley graduate who on April 10, 2008, was among the honorees at RIT’s awards program for Outstanding Undergraduate Scholarship. The criteria for this award include maintaining a 3.85 GPA or better, along with particularly creative work, service to others on and off campus and independent research.
Botzenhart, graduating in May with a BS in Public Policy, is Managing Editor of the Reporter magazine, where he supervises four section editors and 25 writers. He is a Student Justice on the Institute Appeals Board and serves under Dr. Fornieri as his teaching and research assistant, where he helped to edit a recently published book on political science.
Also honored during this program was retired Newark Valley English teacher George Lohmann (right). Nominated by Botzenhart for RIT’s Distinguished Teacher Recognition Program, Lohmann was among the 23 teachers who received this award. For the honor Botzenhart wrote that “George Lohmann taught me by example how to be a leader and how to accomplish great things working with others. He truly cared about the development of his students and gave far beyond what was required of his time and energy.” Lohmann retired from teaching in 2006 and is currently the Director of the Tioga County Teacher Center.
Adam Botzenhart plans to attend Harvard Law School in the fall.

Behind her is Gail Szeliga, Director of the Teacher Center of Broome County which sponsored the conference along with WSKG, the Tioga County Teacher Center and the Owego Apalachin Teacher Resource and Technology Center.

THE TEACHER CENTER SUMMER INSTITUTE 2007

Each year the New York State Teacher Centers offer their Summer Institute to Directors and Policy Board members state-wide. This year's three-day conference was held in Syracuse, July 31 through August 2, at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel and Conference Center. The conference offered several noteworthy keynote speakers along with excellent workshops on the latest educational technology and teaching stategies.
